She said, “Schedule a call with my coach.”

What for? I wondered.

Working as an assistant to a new entrepreneur, I’d learned she was the type that didn’t like to get her hands dirty. She didn’t want to do “plebe” work. Menial tasks were for someone else to do. I was usually the someone else.

Despite taking pains to be kind— my “boss” sometimes delegated in the way you wash your hands after picking up something dirty. I took this job to pay the bills while I decide what I want to be when I grow up, so I went with it. The client was paying, I was curious, so, as instructed, I scheduled a call with her coach.

My client never explained why she wanted us to talk. I assumed she’d told her coach what she wanted from the call— I know. Assuming was my first mistake.

The call.

The coach looked to be less than 40-years-old. Yet it was hard to tell because she’d had so much plastic surgery. The whole thing was odd and it felt odd to see someone who’d modified themselves to look manufactured.
