Snow Moon

Snow Moon shine pure light.

Illuminate Earth in white

brilliance of night.

How the Snow Moon got its Name

Visibly brighter in mid-February, the name Snow Moon came about because this is usually the month of the most snow fall in the northern hemisphere. The moon creates a hazy glow, illuminating the earth in a spectacular bright light.

My own gardens have been thrilling to observe this week (February 16th, 2022) with trees and paths through the snow clearly visible. The birch trees are patched and cracked like an artist’s study in black and white.

Other Names

The Ojibwe and the Tlingit named the moon Black Bear Moon because February is the time of year when bear cubs are born, according to The Old Farmer’s Almanac.

There are many other names for the Snow Moon which signify respect for animals but the Cherokee named this moon Bony Moon and Hungry Moon because of the scarcity of food in the icy cold of February.

Also visible to the naked eye this month are several planets including Mars, Venus, Mercury and Jupiter.

’Til next time — I hope you get to stargaze.
