Telling Workers to Just Stay off Whilst Sick Doesn’t Work

People can’t afford to be sick and it’s another reason I prefer working from home

In the UK people are being urged to avoid going into work whilst sick. Seems logical right? This is a great way to avoid people passing on colds, the flu or in the worst-case scenario Covid-19.

However, this seemingly common-sense idea is never going to work.

Toxic Workplaces Are the Issue

Back in March 2020, before my previous workplace shut, we were all aware of the dangers of this virus and told to stay home with any cold-like symptoms.

That didn’t stop one of my colleagues coming in with ‘just a cold.’ Of course, they had no way of knowing this but decided for themselves it was safe.

It also didn’t stop management completing disciplinaries and back to work interrogations (I mean interviews) for people who have had ‘too many sick days in a row’.

I have never understood how you can dictate how many times someone is allowed to be sick. As well as being ableist it is a procedure that often leads to the worsening of health conditions. To avoid getting into trouble workers keep going longer than they should, especially when it comes to mental…
