When I lived in New York, I had the opportunity to follow Mary Alice’s career and adored how she brought life to her characters on stage and held everyone’s attention beyond our imagination from start to finish. She commanded her space on stage, effortlessly. She will truly be missed as she leaves a legacy to be appreciated.
Mary Alice was a Tony- and Emmy-winning actress known for her roles in “Fences”, “Sparkle,” and “A Different World”. In New York, she was a staple on the Broadway stage. Other film and tv credits included, “The Matrix Resurrections,” “Awakenings,” “To Sleep With Anger,” “The Bonfire of the Vanities,” “The Women of Brewster Place,” “Oz,” and “I’ll Fly Away,” for which she was nominated and won an award for supporting actress.
She was at home on the stage at all times. On Broadway, she appeared in “Having Our Say,” “The Shadow Box,” “Fences,” and “No Place to Be Somebody.” For the stage, Mary Alice won a Tony for featured actress in August Wilson’s “Fences,” opposite James Earl Jones.
