Wayne Shorter, (89) was a saxophonist and composer who worked with the likes of Art Blakey, Herbie Hancock, and Miles Davis. Shorter was a jazz fusion pioneer, an original and influential jazz artist for the last six decades, and was the co-founder of the Weather Report jazz fusion ensemble.

Shorter composed more than 200 compositions, won twelve Grammys, and was nominated 23 times for improvised jazz solo in “Endangered Species. His compositions and work became a standard, a legacy for many to aspire to.

As a saxophonist, he played tenor and soprano saxophones as he moved from bebop to free improvisation. Shorter found his niche and was recognized for this creative and unique artistry as a musician and composer. His solo compositions included a rich palette of saxophone sounds and textures and can be heard in the work of other contemporary tenor saxophonists including Ravi Coltrane, Branford Marsalis, Joe Lovano, Chris Potter, and the list goes on and on.

Shorter, a Newark, New Jersey native, was born on August 25, 1933, and began his music interest early on. His father encouraged him and his brother to pursue music careers. As a teenager, Shorter had an interest in the visual arts i.e. film, painting, and sculpture.
