The Problem with AI || Will AI Take Over?
AI, huh.. sounds fascinating. And from this tone or sound, we assume its origin in some 80s or later, but the truth is it’s way older than you imagine.
If we consider Frankenstein by Marry Shelley, well then the concept of AI dates back to 1818, as Frankenstein got everything in its brain that makes a brain intelligent, it could watch observe and learn things from its surroundings, so yes Frankenstein had intelligence, and again it was man-made, so yeah, it was the Artificial Intelligence of its time. Then there was another of its type in that drama R.U.R.
But those were mere fiction. So where is the real thing? And hence in a brilliant mathematician named Alan Turing with his hypothesis that says if communicated with symbols like 1 and 0, machines can deduce to a set of predictions when fed with input and instructions. Thus, once the fiction is now a hypothesis I.e. ability of machines to deduce to result.
And now it’s time for the hypothesis to come real, in the 40s McCulloch and Pitts developed artificial neurons. And then the workshop at Dartmouth College showcased these projects with very primitive forms of AI, but those were enough to drive people crazy toward it, as it was something completely new.
And this popularity also ignited the discussion on what it would become in the coming decades.
But, when the decades came it is nowhere close to the expectations of the 50s, that’s because people of the 50s had no idea how big it is. People eventually get bored and hence the fundings followed.
But it again came up with wide industrial applications in the 90s and onward.
The problem is it is too much efficient, it is not bound by the illness of our complex biology. And seeing this thing industrialists started replacing man with machines, and that’s caused a 30% workforce share for AI slaves. And this toll is getting higher due to the current pandemic thing.
One may tell that in the future AI will take over the earth, and this may happen but why look for a far future when things are happening right in front of our eyes.
Although in the early and development stage, AI is still able to take away 30% of jobs causing unemployment. Another big problem from AI is emissions, yes AI not directly, but feed on electricity, and as of today around 80% of that come from fossil fuels and thus causing a great amount of emission every year.
Will AI be your enemy or our friend is much of a debate, but for sure if given the same intelligence like ours, they will replace our biological beings.
