George the Magpie Steals Stuff and Terrorizes Uncle

George ran away from home and came to live with my family.

George just turned up one day.

He didn’t care if he was welcome or not. Our place was where he wanted to be. The neighbors didn’t care about George anyway. He was no longer a novelty and with a clipped wing he couldn’t fly, poor fellow.

My father returned George to his previous owners several times, but George always came back to us.

When George arrived he didn’t have everything his own way. He had competition.

There was Bumble, a self invited retriever/collie who just turned up. His previous owners when tracked down thought he’d be better off with us in the country, so he stayed.

We had a succession of fluffy feral tabbies, also self invited. I don’t remember their names but one was called Barmy so that’ll do for this story.

George settled in and all three self invited guests got on well enough and didn’t try to murder each other.

George turned out to be quite a character.

Mischievous, funny, he made his needs known. Sometimes he would somehow get stuck on his back, unable to get upright on his…
