Area 51 is the most famous classified military base in the United States. Despite being known worldwide, not many people know what it actually is.

What we do know is that it’s located in Nevada, just north of Edwards Air Force Base. It was established on September 18th, 1955.

But despite its name. The only planes seen there are those from the US Air Force, and occasionally NASA…but even they don’t have permission to come closer than a few miles from it! This means that Area 51’s runway can’t be used for landing or takeoff…

So, what is it?

All we know for sure is that, since the end of World War II. It has been used to test US military aircraft. In fact, this is where the F-117 Nighthawk stealth fighter, as well as many other aircraft, were born, all housed in massive hangars.

This makes Area 51 look like a huge aircraft factory full of metallic sculptures and their wings…

But Area 51 has a history that is as murky as it is classified.
One theory is that they chose the Groom Lake region, because of its extremely dry climate. It means no rain and no humidity…thus, perfect for testing and storing aircraft without them rusting.
