In 2009 the movie Precious came out. It was a much-anticipated movie with its star-studded cast. It was dark and uncomfortable, and it forced us to come face to face with a deeply depressing reality for some. A movie that touched on topics such as incest and molestation. Monique did a heck of a job acting, and Gabourey was making her film debut. An impressive debut it was, and according to Lee Daniels, the character she was playing was entirely different than who she was in real life. He even stated that her level of confidence and upbeat personality was the reason he felt so comfortable casting her in such a dark role.

Since her debut, we have seen her in a few other places. One major one was a reoccurring role on Empire as Becky Williams from 2015–2020.

I noticed that over the years there have been a lot of jokes made about her appearance. Not a whole lot of talking about her acting roles. Instead, it seems that people are fixated on her out of place appearance.
