A quick read about why you should read.

Killing zombies, farming, and bright flashing games are available to us at any moment. They only require us to take our phones out.

We have found ourselves in a time where we can request or find any entertainment you can think of within a few moments. It's awesome.

However, books shouldn't be ignored. You can customize the world written before you with the personality of your mind. You see dragons of your own making or hear wisdom that changes for each reader. You can experience the feelings of love and tragedy or find the knowledge required to go to the moon, all from reading.

Reading Can Help Your Social Well-Being

Books are powerful tools of imagination and knowledge. Books can also be used to improve your mental state according to this study.

Joining a book club or finding friends to read books with you is highly recommended.

One of the most enjoyable parts you can find in a community of readers is the debates. Predictions will be made, and the meanings of what was said will be discussed. It's incredible to see all of the different perspectives a sentence can have when introduced to a room of people. Not only does this improve communication and a sense of community, but it can also improve your ability to understand more complex topics.

You Can Improve Your Knowledge on Anything

The details and secrets of the world can be found in books. Mysteries of lost cities that were rediscovered like Troy is knowledge you can have. The thoughts on philosophy and morality can be seen from minds that existed thousands of years before the United States was even conceived.

Reading can be the dead communicating lessons and historical events from the perspective of a generation that can't be asked questions.

“The reading of all good books is like conversation with the finest of the past centuries.” — Descartes

Reading Ability and Creativity

A link between creativity and reading ability was found in this study. Even with IQ taken into account, people with better reading and spelling abilities were generally more creative.

I believe creativity is like a muscle, and it needs to be flexed. A great way to flex that creativity muscle is to understand an image in your mental space without having it explained with pictures and 3D models.

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” — Dr. Seuss

Final Thoughts

Reading has provided so much value to me that I see it as non-negotiable in my own life. I have watched lives play out, made friends, talked to the dead, and cast spells.

I have lived lives that weren't my own and gathered knowledge that has and will help me accomplish my goals and can help you with yours as well.

“A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies . . . The man who never reads lives only one.” — George R.R. Martin
