Why There’s No Such Thing as a Writer Anymore

I tried to be a writer and became something else instead

When I realized I wanted to be a writer, here’s how I pictured it:

Me, snowed away, alone, in a cabin in the woods, typing away on my laptop as embers crackle cozily from a fireplace somewhere in the background.

I stare wistfully out the small window in front of my computer and ponder the plot of my novel as bluejays hop from branch to branch on the pine trees outside.

My editor emails to ask if my draft will be ready by next week’s deadline. I inform her it will be.

Oh, the delusion.

The Definition of a Writer Is Changing

Maybe there are still a few people out there who are exclusively writers. But I think the idea of a writer as only a writer is gone.

Here’s why…

It’s not enough just to be a good writer anymore.

You also need to be a content marketer, so you can gauge interest in your work and help promote it when it’s done.

You need to be a social media specialist to some degree; enough to cultivate some kind of audience online who will read your work.
