Winter Damage

I didn’t want another day to begin, but what choice did I have? Once awake, I had to survive the hours until I could sleep again. I opened the curtains, not expecting light to flood into either the room or my life. Looking across the cold empty fields I thought something was different. The broken oak tree was the same, the scars from winter’s storm clearly visible. A limb had been torn away…
