You Can Still Accept Them Even If You Don’t Like Them

Soft voices led to bolder tones. The energy builds because someone crosses the threshold. A heated exchange escalated. Irritation flared as anger rippled across the air. She slammed the spiral notepad down and stormed out of the room. Disappointed, he slumped into a nearby chair with his fist clenched. He glared at the door with his mouth twisted up on one side. There was dead silence.
As bystanders, we watched and absorbed everything — spoken words, movements, even silence. All eyes are on one person. I asked myself, is this necessary?
Disagreements happen. When they do, they are an opportunity for self-awareness. I remind myself that everyone deserves unconditional acceptance. That means no matter what they do, regardless of their behaviors and choices, they are inherently valuable. They don’t have to do certain things or act a certain way for me to accept them.
I endeavor to accept people as they are. “As they are” may have different meanings for different people. For me, it is arriving at a point in life where I am at peace with everything and everybody around me…
