You Should Do This Before Publishing Your Next Medium Article

… to improve the likelihood that people will click to read it.

Most Medium writers — at least at the beginning of their journey on this platform — do the same thing: using stock photos for their articles.

I’ve used them too.

They’re free. Quick and easy to find. Medium even has Unsplash integrated to help writers quickly find the images for their content.

So, there should be nothing wrong with it, right?

Yes, it’s not… until several articles use the same image.

Why Using Stock Photos Can Backfire

Look at this stock photo. It’s been used 200 times on Medium!

Okay, you may say, “just an image, it’s not that important. If my article is compelling, people will read whatsoever.”

You’re right, to some extent. Suppose you’re a high-profile Medium writer like Tom Kuegler or Sinem Günel. In that case, people will check out your article even when you don’t include a featured image.
