Get Motivated To Write After The Holidays
Let me give you a nudge
Will you go cold turkey this holiday season or dabble on the keyboard? If you’re like me, you’ll enjoy a stone-cold break from writing.
But how to get back in the swing once all the holiday dishes are washed and the guests have left?
This question was asked of authors in my writing circle. I have an inkling that you too may need a nudge come January and for this reason, I am sharing writer responses here.
All of these ideas won’t work for everyone, but one works for at least one writer: the one that offered it up. Any of them could work for you too!
What works?
· Take yourself on a writing date to a new location, not your favorite coffee shop.
· Buy a new journal and fill it.
· Block time each day to write, then block a second batch of time to research, review, and experiment. One doesn’t have to follow the other but do both.
· Pick a book and read it like a writer. That means not only digesting the story but the way the story is told.
· Write old-fashioned thank you cards for each of the gifts you received, dinner parties you attended, or visits you had.
· Make a list of all the reasons you love your favorite author.
· Set a writing goal, tell a buddy, and have them hold you accountable for that goal to discuss your success the next time you meet.
· Offer to be a writing buddy to another author to do the same.
· Grab a book in a genre you usually won’t lean into and figure out what that author does that you don’t or won’t or can’t.
· Surround yourself with people who love books; their enthusiasm will rub off.
· Listen to your favorite writing podcasts, or book reviews, or author interviews; their enthusiasm will rub off.
· Write.
