Show Your Work Series — Writer’s Edition
Showing your work is easy until it is not
I can speak your ears off with poise when it comes to how much I like writing.
However, when it comes to sharing it with the world, especially with my family and the people with whom I have to make eye contact later on — it is hunger games for me.
In my opinion, the greatest hurdle a writer has to overcome (well, after the mountain of self-doubt) is the hesitation to show her work to the world.
The feeling I get every time I finish a draft after hours of staring into space and squirming in my seat is so fulfilling.
But afterward, the real nightmare starts. I call it the “After-mare”.
If you give me a choice between attempting to draw the Excalibur out or typing a text to someone I know and sharing a link across my socials about my post, I’d gladly choose the former.
Of course, I want more reads, views, likes, and comments and for my post to go viral yet I don’t want to encounter the WHAT IF questions and experience the bashfulness while promoting my work.
Alas, I found a remedy for my malady.
Recently I got my hands on a book I’ve been treasure-hunting for a while. It’s Austin Kleon’s “Show Your Work”.
It is a book for people who hate the very idea of self-promotion. His Book is a Gold mine. I Highly recommend it to those who share the same phobia for showing your work to the world.
In the upcoming posts, I’ll be posting my key takeaways from his work as a writer & how to apply that to improve my writing skills.
