I regret profoundly that I was not an American and not born in Greenwich Village. It might be dying, and there might be a lot of dirt in the air you breathe, but this is where it’s happening

— John Lennon

At the center of Washington Square Park sits the fountain which feels like a public pool in the summer months. The younger visitors bring bathing suits while adults will take off their shoes to dip their toes in.

In the southwest corner of the park are the chess players. They’re not too fond of photographers as they intently focus on their opposition. They’re always welcoming of friendly competition.

Skateboarders often congregate near the arch and to the east of the fountain… until they’re chased away by NYU public safety or NYPD officers.

The park attracts musicians of all types carrying on the traditions of Greenwich village as a destination for musicians throughout the 20th century.

Budding directors from NYU are often filming throughout the village.

Street vendors line 6th Avenue and Bleecker Street selling books and old records.
