Game of Thrones is so enormously popular that millions will watch it for the first, second or third time and dozens of blogs and podcasts will continue to discuss and review the seven seasons for the rest of 2019.

Game of Thrones, based on Martin’s five novels, has received 47 Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Drama Series three times, more than any other primetime scripted television series. It began airing on HBO in April 2011, surpassed the popularity of HBO’s Sopranos, and the first numbers are in for HBO’s massive Game of Thrones finale, and the final episode of the show’s eighth (and last) season has not only broken the record for the show, but with 13.6 million viewers on the live HBO channel, has become the most watched episode of any HBO show, ever, via The Wall Street Journal.

Both the series and the novels concern the fate of members of noble and royal families during civil war over several years in a fictional world on a continent called Westeros. Palace intrigue, betrayal, coup, and counter-coup, sieges and battles occur there for the most part, but other military and political developments in lands adjacent to Westeros also take place.

Why is Game of Thrones so successful?

It is frustrating, in a good way: Throughout the show, people keep getting frustrated by seeing the bad ones do many bad things without getting caught or punished. Because that frustration is hardly released people keep watching the show hoping that the bad guys will get punished

The unconscious desire to be liberal: Some people, unconsciously, like the world where incest, homosexuality and all other kinds of sexual encounters are possible and allowed. While those people will hardly claim that directly still it’s one of the reasons they like the show. Of course, many of those who love the show get offended by those scenes.

Women empowerment: So many women like Game of Thrones because it shows how women rise to power in a manly world. This is pretty much analogous to the difficulties women face in the modern world.

Taking Curiosity to a new level: The fact that the plot is so complicated and that guessing the next event is really hard takes curiosity to a new level. Also, the fact that the events are too slow to unfold keeps people curious.

Some people enjoy the complexity: Intellectual people usually enjoy the level of complexity they see in the game of thrones. This is one reason why many smart people like the show

Love of violence: One of the unconscious elements behind loving war movies and violent games is the love for violence and gore. Game of the thrones has a shocking amount of violence that appeals to violence fans.

They enjoy seeing the power struggle: Many books have talked about the power struggle, especially in politics, but none have provided a very clear image on what it looks like. Game of Thrones is all about power struggle and how it takes place in real life.

It seems that what we think about the ending really doesn’t because HBO only keeps getting only richer and richer by the minute.
