Information’s Impact on Expectation
Imagine we are living in a world where we wake up every morning with no memory of the past like we born each morning and die at night. Our mind doesn’t know the past or future. In this world how we are going to buy any good, sale, or make friends? And how to satisfy our selves with the goods we have or we buy to fulfill our needs?
Let say you are going to buy a Milk Carton from your local supermarket, you find numerous choices in milk and you buy two different kinds of milk. You come home, pour milk from both cartons into separate glasses and drink them one after another. But you do not taste any difference, why?
Because you are not given any information about milk quality, nutrition or taste of milk or which one is healthy.
When you don’t expect anything, you don’t see any difference. You would be happy, satisfied and we won’t complain.
But we live in a world where our minds are stuck differentiating between all the experiences we had in past. We take suggestions from others and their suggestions are based on their experiences. In this real world, we make choices based on the data our mind has collected from past experiences and endorsement by our dearest friends and family or by our celebrity we are a fan of. And that changes our perspective about a person or brand.
All such data and information in our mind add a lens to see a difference that may or may not exist. We then start expecting results we interpret from data and the interpretation fed to our mind. We might be consuming the same milk without any difference in the percentage of fats it contains or purity or taste. But we find dissimilarity in taste and results, we get fat by one but not by others because these are the result we expected and believed in our expectation.
So we get what we expect or achieve what we believe in.
