Koh-i-Noor: The History of the World’s Most Infamous Diamond

In this new attempt I’m trying to compress the books I read into a easy readable less than 5 minute content.

My first book for this attempt is from my favorite author William Dalrymple on the mystic Kohinoor diamond. The book traces the bath taken by Kohinoor diamond until it reached the British crown and the blood shed it caused.

  • Origin of the diamond is still disputed some compare it to the Samamanthika to Krishna era where the sun god presented it as an gift to the King of Mathura,India
  • The king while went on hunting was mowed down by a lion and the diamond went to the hands of bear king who gave it to his son
  • Krishna knowing the issue asked the bear king to surrender the diamond which ended up in a 38 day gift between Krishna and the bear king. Bear king realized it that Lord Krishna was an incarnation of Vishnu and gave the diamond back
  • The diamond passed on through many generations untill it ended up in the hands of Mughal dynasty
  • Another story is that the diamond was stolen an Hindu idol in South India
