Mount Athos has been the center of Eastern orthodox Christianity for a long time which 20 monasteries situation in mountain peninsula with approximately 2000 monks. The entire region works like a monastery. Its believed that after Jesus Christ was crucified Virgin Mary left for Cyprus and her boat went off course and ended in Mount Athos.
