6 Different Types of Prose Writing

Prose writing can be classified in many ways.

Here is a classification according to the goal of writing different forms of non-fiction.

  1. Creative and literary writing aims at creating emotions and help the readers experience a certain emotional state.
  2. Rhetorical writing aims to win arguments (with or without empirical evidence) and steer people’s behavior in specific directions. This can include the worst of ideological propaganda and political prose as well.
  3. Copywriting helps sell goods and services and market merchandise. It’s a tool of commerce to help sellers earn money and help buyers purchase the best product and service possible in the market.
  4. Business writing aims at controlling business processes and administrating organizations smoothly. It helps to organize teams and make sure they work efficiently and productively.
  5. Technical writing explains and teaches how systems and gadgets work in sequential procedural steps. Its goal is to offer solutions to technical problems.
  6. Scientific writing aims to explain scientific concepts, findings, and make convincing arguments on the basis of repeatable empirical observations. To be valid, scientific writing must be peer-reviewed and approved. Its aim is to advance scientific knowledge and expand the technological knowledge base.
