I'll let you know in a month

Like the local mechanic, old Dave said when he saw my Saab in for major work :

“A lot of work, oh yeah, a lot of work”.

I could see Dave’s brain synapses being replaced with dollar signs.

So yes the first impression of the publication thing is just that: a lot of work. The editor is not at all like the simple and intuitive Medium editor, it’s more like a clunky, idiosyncratic monolith designed by a coder who wanted to stand out (in the 1990s).

I may be being too harsh here as it is only early days and I expect I will know a little more in a month or so.

Instead of expressing my limited knowledge, I will be suggesting some very good articles written by those who have mastered the art and have excellent skills, later in the article.

First, establish what you want to achieve with the publication:

There are two possible forks here:

  • Personal Blog with only your own work ( or perhaps a few guest posts).
  • Community publication with several writers and or editors.

The first choice is a lot less work, writers often go this route to collate their own thematic stories and articles and showcase them. The downside is only you do the writing, which you can do just fine without a publication.

The second choice may be a lot more work, but it has the energy and talent of at least several people and is more likely to get followers and readers.

And here are the experts:
