Medium Tips

Medium Tips: Utilities You May Not Know About

Kickers, Private Notes, Downloads, Unlisted Pages

Kicker:

A kicker is defined as:

“a line of newspaper typeset above a headline usually in a different typeface and intended to provoke interest in, editorialize about, or provide orientation for the matter in the copy heads” ¹

It looks like this when you are creating /editing a page

The method for creating a kicker is a little weird and clunky and not at all obvious.

After you create your title and subtitle, move your cursor back to previous to the first letter in the title (in the above image that would be S in Story), hit enter and type what you want to as your kicker, then highlight it and choose the green T (shown in below image)and Kicker should appear as the option on the left. That’s it. The Kicker can add a bit of flair or interest to your title.

Private Notes:

Have you ever wanted to contact someone on medium discreetly? Perhaps pointing out a glaring typo, and not wishing to embarrass the person. I do this to help people out, and mostly they are grateful, someone asked me how I left this note.

Highlight any text on the person's story, or article who you wish to contact and choose the padlock on the right of the black tab. If there is no padlock the person has chosen not to allow private messages which can be done in settings.

Then the private notes box should appear, you can leave a short note and hit send (underneath). You can’t do this on a mobile phone, nor will the person be able to see your message (if they are using a phone or tablet), but they will get an email with your note, which may be confusing to them.

Download Your Work:

It’s Always a good idea to regularly download everything you write, especially if you are like me and only write online with no copies.

Go to Settings:

And hit download .zip

Unlisted Pages

Unlisted pages are published but not seen by your followers, nor are they behind the paywall or distributed at all. Useful if you are doing experimental work and want to see how it looks before releasing it to the world. You can show these pages by direct link only.

After you write your story in draft hit the three dots … top right and go to Manage Unlisted Settings > Make this story unlisted? Example below.
