Who wouldn’t get extra excited when you bump into the words “May Family Reunion tayo”, considering that Filipinos are the best in organizing parties and get together. Food is everywhere (most exciting part), relatives are everywhere (most probably half are strangers to you), the beat of the music is moving your hands in the air like you just do not care (love Home so much), and with your cute little nieces/nephews that made this day extra memorable because of their cute ninja moves, isn’t this day a big sight to see?

Now that holiday season is up to your calendar, family reunions are something to prepare and arrange. So we gathered and made a list of remarks that you could expect from your relatives in your family gathering.

  1. “Kaganda/kagwapo naman ng batang to. Kanino ka bang anak?” Then insert a dazzling and beautiful smile here, you will be proud of this, though they actually say that to most of your cousins.

2. “Hala, sya na ba yan. Maliit pa noong huli ko syang nakita,” And then check you out from head to toe. Wow, that’s one awkward thing.

3. “Sya nga pala mga pinsan mo sila,” And the best you can do is to say Hi and smile, cause most of them are strangers to you.

4. “Tumaba ka.” The moment when you don’t know how to react, should you say ‘Thank you po’ or ‘Hindi kaya!’.

5. “Oh, kain pa kayo tikman nyo to!” And everyone will gather and get a taste of the food, funny that even you are full already, you still want to get some.

6. “Mag-mano ka tito/tita/lola/lolo mo yan,” One thing that we, Filipinos, are proud of is the way we show respect for the elders, especially to our lolos and lolas who are so fond of their apos, seeing them grow up so big and healthy.

7. “Hala, di sya nagsasalita ng Tagalog!” Okay, tissue please! The hardest yet the most challenging part in any family reunion is meeting the relatives from abroad. You really need to practice your English, or we could speak a little English but with more hand gestures and body languages.

8. “Lumiit ka (sabay tabi sayo para mapakita na mas matangkad sya),” Wait. What? I shrunk, or they just get taller and I’m not? Most of your relatives, especially your cousins, keeps on saying ‘Lumiit ka’ instead of ‘Di kana tumangkad’.

9. “Wag muna mag-aasawa agad ha! Magtapos muna ng pag-aaral,” The lolos and lolas favorite ‘pabaon’ lines to their apos. Sweet that, they always love to show their concerns about your future.

10. “1, 2, 3… Smile!” in any occasions, birthday parties, reunions, weddings, Christmas and New Year’ parties, capturing the moments makes everything a total package. Taking photos of their laughs, amusements, surprised faces, these will remind you of how memorable each moment is.

Ready now for any gatherings? Just don’t forget that even how hard or flattering their thoughts of you, remember, the presence of a family is the best present you will ever receive.
