If you want to achieve great things as a writer, you should remember that you will have a great deal of competition to deal with. This is especially difficult if you are starting out as a writer and don’t have a fan base yet. So if you want to become a truly great writer, you should know how to enhance your writing skills and how to reach out to potential fans. That way, once you do set out on writing a book of your very own, you will know what to do. Here are 5 Writing Hacks to becoming a great writer.

1. Master the basics

Before you even think of writing a book of your very own, it is always a good idea to master the basics first. Remember, writing is an acquired skill. And no matter how talented or passionate you are, you will still struggle in attaining mastery if you don’t put in the time. So make it a priority to hone your craft. Practice your writing at a daily basis. Hone your grammar, punctuations, spelling and every other aspect of the writing process. By mastering the basics, you will have the right skillset to pursue a career in professional writing.

2. Keep your sentences short and concise

Aside from mastering the basics of writing, you should have a minimalist view to the writing process. Most readers don’t like overly long or superfluous sentence compositions. So it is advisable that you make your sentences short and concise. By doing so, your writing will get to the heart of the topic, without it sounding awkward or clunky.

3. Expand your vocabulary

If you want to make your writing more colorful and multifaceted, it always pays to expand your vocabulary. This is because the more words you know, the more you will be able to convey your message through your writing. So make it a habit to learn a new word every day. And if you don’t know the definition of the word, you should check it up on a dictionary. Try to use the words in your daily writing sessions.

4. Don’t restrict your reading to one genre

If you want to develop a truly unique writing style, you should read as much as possible. This is because the more books you read, the more topics you will be exposed to. And the more topics you are exposed to, the more effective your writing will be. You should never restrict your reading to just one genre. Explore new concepts and try reading new literary works.

5. Create a character dossier

Aside from reading new works, it is also important that you know how to create great characters. Remember that some of the greatest literary works of the age centered on their main character. Some great examples being Harry Potter of the Harry Potter book series or Jay Gatsby of the Great Gatsby classic. But writing a truly great character is easier said than done. It takes hours of practice and preparation. It takes a lot of thought and trial and error. One way to practice your character writing, is to create a character dossier. Take a notebook and start writing characters. Give them unique backstories, traits and physical characteristics. By creating a character dossier, you will have a myriad of great characters to choose from and have the opportunity to practice character writing at the same time.
