During my college days, most of the time I spent outside classrooms was in tea shops.

Every time, I used to hear someone say, “One tea without sugar.” Behind this line lies diabetes, a condition also known as diabetes mellitus.

Asians, especially Indians, have a high prevalence of diabetes, and one of the reasons is diet. Asians, whose staple food is rice, are particularly affected by diabetes.

Generally, it is common for people above fifty to develop diabetes. I was shocked to learn that a college student I knew had lived with diabetes since childhood.

High-carb foods can cause diabetes if eaten continuously after age fifty.

However, many might not be aware of diabetes, which can be present since childhood or even from birth.

Insufficient amounts of the hormone insulin cause diabetes. Insulin is a protein that helps regulate blood sugar (blood glucose) levels. The pancreas secretes insulin. When it is low or absent, blood sugar rises. This is what we call diabetes.
