This is a ‘choose your own’ story of trial and punishment, set in the year 1800. Click here for the story’s beginning. For the previous chapter, click here for ‘Meeting’, and here for ‘Politics’.

You fake a smile for Maria and her crew. “Sounds amazing,” you lie, “but that was a long court case, and I need to poop.”

They scowl, but a guard leads you away. “There,” she says, indicating a room with ancient-looking tiles. “Don’t forget to wash your hands. There’s cholera in the city, pal.”

You hurry away, closing the door behind. There’s no seat, just a broad hole that leads down to… who knows where? You peer in, seeing a murky tunnel below.

This time, an escape?

You hold your nose a moment, pondering the prospect of crawling in.

And then you…

  1. Leap into the dark tunnel (click here).
