This is a Drabble — a story of exactly 100 words. This Drabble was inspired by our camping club’s Friday night campfire during our stay at Bear Creek in July 2024.

The prompt word for today, Saturday, July 13, from Grim Flandango is BALL.

Please, if you would be so kind, remain on this page for at least 30 seconds to allow your visit to count as a read. Claps, highlights, and comments are much appreciated. Thank you.

The hour grew late, and most club members had headed back to their campers.

The wood pellets in the fire pit were slowly burning themselves out. The five of us still who remained suddenly became quiet as a ball of fire rose from the pit, hovered for a moment, and settled back in.

Chester and I stood up and looked into the smoldering coals. A chill ran through me when I saw a bizarre face looking up from the low flames. It hissed a name.

I turned to Chester to ask if he heard it, too, and he was gone.
