You row for what seems like hours, but only minutes passed. The creature maneuvered the tiny boat through narrow channels, eluding the Devourers in the maze. At last, you emerge into a smaller cavern where bioluminescent fungi cast an eery glow across the still water.

Beaching the boat on a pebbly shore, you both collapse, gasping for breath. As the immediate danger passes, you turn to your tiny savior.

“I’m Zar’eth,” the creature said, blinking slowly. “I’ve lived in these waters for eons, but never have I seen such horrors as the Devourers.”

He explained that the magic seeping from Zaalbar’s tower above had long influenced the underground realm. But recently, as the sorcerer’s protective spells weaken, new dangers have spawned.

“We must find a way back to the surface,” he says, pointing to two paths. “We must warn those in power above. The fate…
