Mental Health and Memoir
The Day I Found Out I Had Anxiety
My mental health story, and recovery.
It was the pandemic. But for all that was going on back then, it was a normal day. I was in online high school, and grew fond of the new normal, fully unaware of what it did to me.
That afternoon I was chilling. Relaxing. And all of a sudden I felt an irregular heart rate. For a moment I thought it had been a food allergy, but I knew full well it wasn’t. I just didn’t know what was wrong with me.
I had an anxiety attack. It wasn’t my first, and it wouldn’t be my last, but it was the first time things got so bad that they were beyond me.
I’ve tried hard to forget that moment, but moments like that don’t just disappear.
I called 911. I felt like I was shaking to the point I couldn’t really move or breathe properly. The woman on the other side of the phone thought I was a girl. The firemen showed up for some reason. They were nice and took care of me until the paramedics arrived, and I was shipped off to the hospital.
I’d been to the hospital before, having had food allergies, and to go visit others, but I’d never ended up there for an anxiety attack. Thankfully this was my first and last time, thus far. Fingers crossed.
