In preparing my arguments, I came across two resources from Nature that provide background and solutions for ethical problems posed by the developemnt of artificial intelligence.

“Ethics of artificial intelligence.” Nature, vol. 521, no. 7553, 2015, pp. 415–18. ProQuest. search.proquest.com.libproxy1.usc.edu/docview/1684645373/fulltext/3494110FC5D14B40PQ/1?accountid=14749.

Summary: Four experts weigh in on ethics of artificial intellience, including AI weapons systems, access to AI, and human-robot interaction.

Review: This is an excellent article that provides a wide range of information on different issues with AI. Most interesting was the ethical dilemma of equal access to AI in terms of beneficial technologies like heathcare, but valid points about AI-driven weapons systems are also raised.

Deng, Boer B. “Machine ethics: The robot’s dilemma.” Nature, vol. 523, no. 7558, 2015, pp. 24–26. doi: 10.1038/523024a.

Summary: It’s relatively simple to program AI to follow a set of ethical standards when there is a clear distinction between “right” and “wrong.” But issues arise when an AI has to choose between two bad outcomes, or has to make the “best” of a bad situation.

Review: This article provides excellent background on the real dilemma when its comes to artificial intelliegence. It’s easy to code for foreseeable events, but very difficult to implement a set of rules that the AI can follow when the explicit rules do not fully apply.
