Last year of December 31st, Taiwan Center of Disease Control (CDC) had received virus information from Wuhan, China. Although Taiwan was safe, CDC started an epidemic prevention team to protect people.

The first confirmed case was on January 21, a woman who had traveled from Hubei, China.

CDC educates people of the dangers of the coronavirus, telling them to wear masks, to wash their hands for at least 20 seconds, to social distance, and to avoid crowded places.

Chen Shih-Chung, a conductor of the Central Epidemic Command Center in Taiwan.

Shih-Chung, Chen — Taiwan Centers for Disease Control Conductor — give details of each coronavirus confirmation case and update new policies of protecting Taiwanese health awareness.

He has a news conference every day, updating every one of new confirmed cases and their origin. For example he informs them of their age and travel history, both local and international. He also updates the citizens about restrictions on travel and the levels of danger.

Because of cultural relations and the past SARS incident, Taiwanese people have the discipline and understanding of the seriousness of the situation and are willing to obey all the rules.

Also, governors provide more masks to machine makers to ensure everyone has masks to decrease the rate of infection. They made sure no one wasted masks. They limited that one person could have two makes in one week in January.

CDC makes propaganda on social media of how to protect yourself and others, and created guides to buy masks information. They also have this information in different languages, such as Chinese, Taiwanese, English, and Hakka.

Most traveling passengers were not allowed to enter and transfer to the country after March 24th due to Coronavirus.

Citizens who do enter from severe countries have to fill up “COVID-19 Health Declaration and Home Quarantine Notice” and 14 days of quarantines, which means they cannot leave the location that is provided on the documents, they live in individual rooms, and their phones get tracked.

Violators are fined up to NT $1,000,000 (USD 33,000.)

However, CDC also understands the difficulty of being quarantined and that people cannot go anywhere. They offer free Netflix accounts, masks, and snacks. Also, ask quarantines’ families and friends to support them on the phone.

Epidemic prevention compensation NTD1,000/daily for those who have 14 days of quarantines. Applicants to isolators, quarantine, and caring of quarantine family members who cannot take care of themselves.

Benefits of following rules for quarantine is that they can apply epidemic prevention financial support NT$14,000 (USD 467.)

“I think the Taiwanese have discipline. Governors are telling people what the virus is all about and how to prevent it, such as wearing masks and washing their hands properly. Now, they are helping other countries to fight the virus,” Maaha said, an African student who has been staying in Taiwan for a few years.

As time goes on, governors are always updating citizens’ mask buying policies for peoples convenience to buy. For instance, people needed to line up at the pharmacy in the beginning. Later on, people could order them online and pick them up at 7–11 stores for crowd evacuations which avoid crowds and saves time for students and workers.

Even later, they decided to sell masks in vending machines as well.

People who take public transportation have to wear masks and check that their body temperature is below 37.5 celsius in order to ride.

At the end of April, the epidemic gradually slowed down. Taiwan went 33 days without local coronavirus cases and 8 days with no important infections up to date. “Taiwan is home for me. I do feel safe and no regrets.” Maaha said.

COVID-19 is mortal for everyone. People are protecting themselves by wearing masks and washing their hands properly.

They also stay knowledgeable by following the updated policies every day in order to guard and protect the beautiful country.
