At IF we see two key shifts in Generative AI that will redefine industries

When we cut through the noise of the current, solvable, problems in AI, we see two key shifts:

  1. LLMs applied to infrastructure create Learned Services
  2. Personal AIs.

Both shifts transform how we build and experience products and services

They will also impact what we will come to expect. Any organisation that does not understand the implications of these shifts is at risk of;

  • Disintermediation
  • Relationships with customers and colleagues becoming shallower
  • Being left behind.

What these two shifts mean for designers and service providers

LLMs will turn more service providers into dumb pipes

When applied to technical infrastructure, LLMs become a kind of connective tissue. Imagine fascia in the human body.

An AI generated image of imaginary connective tissue. The picture is abstract and has 3 colours: white, blue and pink. It almost looks like a cross section of a leaf, with different nodes and connective lines in between them.

LLMs will connect different systems – at scale. They will execute complex and multi-part tasks, across different departments and organisations.

We’ve written about examples of this in our Learned Services paper.

Teams that do not grasp the capabilities of Learned Services, and adapt their strategy, will become a dumb pipe. Dumb pipes make less money than smarter ones.

In banking, Apple’s use of Open Banking to integrate bank data into Apple Wallets illustrates how tech companies are reshaping customer relationships. Banks, though providing the data, risk fading into obscurity. This shift may lead to even more engaging experiences, possibly through private, personal AI on your iPhone.

Personal AI will be ephemeral and multi-modal

There has been a lot of talk about personal AI, but we have yet to see personal AI as we at IF define them… so far.

The personal AI that companies are describing (and launching) are personalised avatars. True Personal AI will be private to each of us. They will be ephemeral, multi modal and everywhere.

Customers and colleagues will form connections with one or more personal AIs, reshaping the way services are provided and received. Service providers, in turn, will manage numerous relationships with personal AIs belonging to each of their customers and colleagues.

That might give you the “ick”. But just think how often you click “accept” to data sharing on services today. Many, if not most of us, will be agreeing to train and use a personal AI. This shift will be like an avalanche. Impossible to go back.

Getting ahead of this shift means shaping the markets that are to come. If you explore Personal AI now you will set new standards, interaction design and commercial models too. There is so much potential for innovation here.

“With great power comes great responsibility”

Just as any technology, AI will (and already does) create bad outcomes for society. AI is a socio-technical challenge, and opportunity.

With the shifts described above, AI will have even more societal, economic, environmental and political impact. To design and deliver AI responsibly, you have to create the space to understand the inherent trade -offs, and act accordingly.

Trustworthy experiences help people feel empowered, safe and respected

The organisations that deliver the AI we can trust, will win.

The opportunity to become a global leader in trust and AI is now. What if that was you?

Get in touch

We have the privilege of working with clients on different implementations of LLMs and personal AI since 2016. Most recently we assisted a global client in setting standards for trust in their AI product design. Chances are, you and your family probably use those AI products today.
