What works must become reflexive.

Networking is a way of life. For screenwriters, particularly, who pound keys for hours at a time, meeting influential executives or investors who can make or break your career with a single decision is an integral part of the puzzle.

I’ll begin with some perspective: I ran and moderated a professional networking group for entertainment professionals for nearly 10 years, until I left in 2015 to focus on my writing. The idea was to level the playing field between filmmakers and possible private equity investors or finance company reps by seating an equal number of each (it didn’t always work out that way, but that was the goal). The thought behind the effort was based on a screenwriter’s reality: The more you bring to the table in terms of money and/or attachments, the less you will need from the network, studio or production company, and the more control you can negotiate for your project.

There certainly is no guarantee of attaining more control, but your position to do so is that much stronger.
