Yesterday morning in Hsinchu City, a group of armed men in masks raided a bank and showed a note demanding a huge amount of money from the clerks who were doing their routine work. At the same time, they took five people hostage and threatened to shoot them unless the clerk did what they requested. The police rushed to the scene and tried to negotiate with the gunmen. To keep the hostages alive, the police pretended to make a concession while communicating with a witness who had hidden himself inside an empty vault in the bank and covertly called the police. The gunmen somehow discovered the subterfuge and a fierce shootout ensued. Unfortunately, both sides suffered heavy casualties ─ one police officer was killed, two were badly injured and three gunmen were shot dead during the exchange of gunfire. It is disappointing to report that the rest of the gunmen are still at large with the money they robbed, but the police have declared that they will do their best to bring the malicious criminals to justice.
