According to the Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary, pride is a feeling of pleasure or satisfaction that you get when you or people have done something well. For example, a mother feels glad on seeing her son graduate from school successfully, and we might say “The sight of her son graduating filled her with pride.” On the other hand, pride also means “to have respect for yourself.” For instance, if a man faces a difficulty and refuses assistance extended to him by others, we can describe this situation as “Pride would not allow him to accept the help provided.” However, some Chinese people may confuse pride with arrogance because these two words have almost the same meaning. While pride has a positive meaning, arrogance has a negative one. Therefore, the next time you think of using this word, make sure you use it in the right way!
