According to Research … You are what you wear

As you can read from my bio. I am pretty much fashion obsessed — I have a fashion blog. So I couldn’t wait to base this article on fashion.

Clothes to me makes up my identity, you can sense what type of person I am through them. There are days when I dress like a sloth. I would wear joggers, hoodie, my UGGs and a hat — which means I am tired/unbothered/stressed the hell out and couldn’t care less about looking nice and grab what is comfortable/ easy. Then I have my tomboy days when I wear over sized clothing or I’m in a Puma or Adidas tracksuit head to toe. This look is for when I feel like a boy and I genuinely do have an interest in men’s clothes they can be so stylish — which I love to imitate. I have my retro/vintage side and that comes from me being a 90’s kid, it brings out my inner child because I loved how my Mum used to dress me during the 90’s. Then I have my bohemian/ festive look, this sums up the free-spirited an care-free me. Literally just having fun and letting loose. Then I have my cute-girl look, for when I feel girly and sweet. Then finally I have my sexy look, for when I feel untouchable/prestige/ boujee. If you are unfamiliar with this slang word it means: “High class, flossin’, ballin’. One who possesses swag. Elite, rich.”

I had to explain my choice of clothing and my style. All of them except from my tired/unbothered/stressed the hell out look bring out some sort of confidence within me. Confidence that I never normally have within myself but my style brings the confident girl out of me. It makes me proud of how I dress, it also makes me proud on the compliments I also get from people. The fact that I have the power to inspire people and they want to copy my looks — that brings out a confidence which is indescribable. This ALL ties in with research!

According to science “You are what you dress” — it can have a significant affect on one’s confidence. This was researched by Professor Karen Pine who noticed how one’s attire can affect confidence. Professor Pine wrote a book called Mind What You Wear who had stated that the type of clothes you wear can affect your mental processes and perceptions. So when you wear something you haven’t put in much effort you will feel low self esteem. However, when you do put in effort into what you wear, you will have an high self esteem according research by Professor Pine.

Her results were conducted by a study called the Superman experiment. Professor Pine asked some participants to wear a Superman t-shirt, this then further led to people feeling confident but they also felt a lot stronger — lol the power of clothes is such an amazing thing.

So technically you are what you wear. If I wear a banana suit, I would feel like I’m long, large and tasty. I would love to feel like that all day, everyday but hey people wouldn’t take me seriously and think I am completely bonkers.

I also choose to feature Rihanna in this article because she shows different personalities with her outfits. She was named a fashion icon in 2014 at the CDFA Fashion Award (NSFW) because her self-esteem comes from her outfit choice.

Rihanna stated, “ Growing up I didn’t have a lot of access to fashion. But as far as I could remember, fashion has always been my defense mechanism. Even as a child I remember thinking, “She can beat me, but she cannot beat my outfit.” [Laughter and cheers.] And to this day I mean, that is how I think about it. I can compensate for all my weaknesses with my fashion. And so really, you really can … I enjoy the most that you can tell so much about who someone is just by their style — the way they put fashion together. And I think fashion has been an outlet for me to express myself, to speak up, to say who I am and to be very loud about it at times, and I just like to have fun with it. Fashion is just a world of thrills, it’s exciting, there’s no rules, there’s just … I mean, SHE has tons of rules [gestures at Anna Wintour, audience laughs] … Scratch that! Scratch that! [More audience laughter.] There are RULES! But rules are meant to be broken. [Audience cheers and claps.]” (Rihanna, 2014).

Even though she is known for being a singer she is also known for her looks and you have people like Kim Kardashian, Kylie Jenner as well as many guys and girls imitating her and making it a trend.

As we have come to the end of this article here’s one of my fashion quotes which I live by.

Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak” — Rachel Zoe
