‘Spilling the tea’ on what fuels our tea addiction — is it a bad addiction?

Us Brits, on average drink 3 ½ cups of tea every day, even with people over 85 drinking more than 5 cups a day! That’s a lot of tea!

As I am sure most people would agree — tea is amazing! It just soothes the soul and drinking a nice warm cuppa while watching some Netflix is the best way to wind-down at the end of a day!

Whether your ‘tea-poison’ is a classic English Breakfast tea, a healthy green tea, or a fruit tea — any tea seems to hit the spot.

A personal favourite of mine at the moment is lemon and ginger tea with a spoonful of honey, which is great for a cold and makes you feel right as rain after drinking it.

But why are we so addicted to tea?

Well, as I am sure most of you know, aside from tasting great — tea has caffeine in, which might make you a little bit dependant on drinking it. But it’s a good type of dependant, because most of the time tea is healthy — unless you’re one of those maniacs who puts three or more sugars in their cup of tea, then it might be unhealthy!

Different teas have lots of different health benefits, but is there such a thing as drinking too much tea?

It is known that tea improves gut health, reduces the risk of obesity, blood pressure and boosts immunity — also fighting off cancer and heart disease. So, no… there is no such thing as drinking too much tea

And those who don’t like hot drinks, don’t worry I haven’t forgotten about you! There are lots of cold Milk Teas you can try, especially with tapioca — like a great cold matcha Milk Tea, especially now it’s getting close to summer!

However, don’t be fooled by the word ‘tea’ wherever you see it, assuming it is going to be healthy, Bubble tea (usually with popping boba) is quite sugary and definitely not healthy. Regardless it is still delicious!

But don’t worry — you can treat yourself every now and again!

So, the main takeaway from tea:

Tea addiction is healthy. If anything, we should be drinking more tea! I know I am going to be increasing my tea consumption and staring extra-long at the colourful wall of tea selections they have in Tesco — just lay off the sugary teas, okay?
