Feel The Fear But Do It Anyway

I take you through the Journey of how choosing to have a little faith can be a game changer when facing your fears.

Being an Undergrad at University, wanting to start a business and, all the while balancing a social life, I have found that coming to terms with ‘finding your sense of self’ can be difficult. The former daunting question “What do you want to be when you grow up?”, has now become the even more intimidating, “So, you’re graduating soon… what do you want to do?” — and if I’m honest with you, it scares the life out of me.

The world is big and full of wonder, but if we are being honest, the uncertainty of the unknown can be more than just a little frightening; so no wonder so many of us are cowering at the thought of the future.

In my journey towards bettering myself and dropping my ongoing excuses, I have decided to not let my fear of the unknown act as a barricade between myself and my future, by simply taking each day as it comes.

When it comes to being overcome by fear, I find that it is much easier to tell yourself to “just get on with it” than it is to actually - well, get on with it. We all, at different stages of our lives, have felt some type of fear.

From the fear of the frightening monsters in our closet, to the socially cowering thought of presenting on stage; fear is something that has been ingrained in our very being since the beginning of time.

But how do we let go of the fear and run with what is holding us back, even when we feel physically numbed by thought of doing something we are scared of?

I’d like to let you in on a little not so secret secret.

Everyone single person, whether small or great has something that they’re scared of. But I’ve found that the difference between a thrill seeker and a person who doesn’t face their fears, is simply the ability to fear it all and do it anyway.

It can be easy to be distracted by other people’s successes when we see them striving and taking steps that we could only ever dream of. But the reality behind the success of others is simply what you have seen as a final and finished product, minus the countless thoughts of uncertainty and doubt.

When you see others taking centre stage in their craft, it’s easy to believe that they have always had it all together; but it seems that even some queens get nervous and fearful.

Some of the greatest and most successful people when asked have said that there have been times when they have felt so scared that they have been physically sick, but from the outside they have are seen as so strong and so noble. But the outcome of their determination to overcome fear has brought forth more rewarding accomplishments than they have failures, and that is something that I admire the most.

I surely am no finished product, but knowing that even the most established human beings in the world have achieved so much, in spite of their fears, has definitely played a part in how I’ve chosen to travel in this journey of life. The issue is not feeling the thought in the first place; but it’s about taking your time and telling yourself that regardless of it all, you will still make it.

So the next time I get that small, whispering feeling telling me that I cannot be all of whom I am called to be,

I’ll brush it off, feel the fear and do it anyway.

‘Don’t be afraid; just believe.’” Mark 5:36
