Lily Allen LDN album cover

The days of double denim and updating your Blackberry Messenger bio upon every minor inconvenience are sadly gone. These amazing tracks, however, are here to stay:

1. Milkshake- Kelis

Milkshake, Kelis — YouTube

Starting off with a top-quality bop, we have Milkshake by Kelis. Looking back, a 9-year-old belting ‘my milkshake brings all the boys to the yard’ is pretty concerning, but I was having the time of my life, so who cares? To be honest, I’m still not really sure what Kelis means by ‘milkshake’, and I’m going to live a happy life not knowing.

2. Babycakes- 3 Of A Kind

Babycakes, 3 Of A Kind — YoutTube

Another concerning song to be singing in your first decade of life, but again, when this tune comes on the whole room is up singing it word for word. By ‘whole room’ I don’t just mean myself (well, not every time anyway). The video for Babycakes perfectly encapsulates everything tacky about the noughties music scene: terrible outfits, tiny eyebrows and the kind of rapped verses that you can learn word for word to show your mates how cool you really are.

3. Where Is The Love? — The Black Eyed Peas

Where Is The Love? The Black Eyed Peas — YouTube

I wholeheartedly blame this song for turning me into the left-wing, politically-correct warrior that I am today, and I make no apologies for that. With thanks to Fergie, will.i.am and the other less important members of whom I have forgotten (sorry), we have a song that not only calls for world peace, but is also an absolute anthem. With the current political situation the world is experiencing, this song may never have been more relevant than now. Listen, enjoy, reflect.

4. TiKToK- Ke$ha

TikTok, Ke$ha — YouTube

If you’re like Ke$ha and myself, and you ‘wake up in the morning feeling like P. Diddy’, then this song will bring you back to your roots. We owe Kesha great thanks for supplying the soundtrack for our school discos and overdramatising what life in our 20s would be like, as I write this with one hand on a hot water bottle, and the other in a bag of Flamin’ Hot Wotsits (highly recommend).

5. Five Colours In Her Hair- McFly

Five Colours In Her Hair, McFly — YouTube

A timeless classic, and definitely the reason why I tried to be so ~quirky~ as a child. Do yellow, clip-in hair extensions count as one of the five colours? Perhaps listening to this as an adult will inspire you to shake things up and book a spontaneous hair appointment. Who knows? Regardless, you should give it play and rock out like it's 2004 again.

6. LDN- Lily Allen

LDN, Lily Allen — YouTube

Nothing symbolizes a summer’s day better than this upbeat, catchy song about the dualism that is London: seems nice, isn’t really. Despite us being too young to get arrested when this tune came out, Lily Allen sure does well to make it seem like a typical part of a charismatic day out in the UK (I know what I’m doing this weekend). We should also thank her for bestowing upon us the iconic dress and trainer combo. She was and still is a trendsetter for us all.

7. Shake it- Metro Station

Shake it, Metro Station — YouTube

Who poured endless talent into the Cyrus gene pool? Well, someone must have, because Miley’s brother, Trace Cyrus, created a number that still makes me want to get up, side part my hair and thrash around like an emo in the wind. Whilst this is the only song I have ever encountered by Metro Station, it is the only one I need to. Give it a listen and let me know if it makes you want to re-enter, or maybe start, your ‘rawr’ phase.

@MyChildhood, miss u.
