Understanding your foodie needs

Mungo’s is a bar and bistro situated on the University of Kent’s Canterbury campus. They offer their students and visitors a breakfast and lunch menu that accommodates for both meat and veggie lovers. When you walk in the atmosphere is very studenty and vibrant- with bright décor and coloured lights, high bar chairs, both small and large tables, sofas, numerous TVs on the walls playing music, two VIP rooms and very friendly student staff.

Not only does this student hub accommodate foodies, but every Monday evening there’s a pub quiz, on Wednesdays there are weekly sport society socials, on Friday nights there’s a disco with a different DJ and event every week, and then on special occasions they host the biggest University campus party at their ‘Massive Mungo’s’ college disco.

Back to the food- their breakfast menu provides an array of breakfast options ranging from breaky baps, to pancakes- with pretty much any topping, your everyday toast and cereal and of course your much loved full English or all American breakfast- with vegetarian alternatives.

Then you have the lunch menu which severs until 9pm. Whether you fancy a light bite or a hearty meal this menu has something for you- from grilled sandwiches to flatbreads, to healthy salads and tasty curries, or of course a good old burger- ranging from classic to gourmet.

And finally for those of you with a sweet tooth, or just feel like having something deliciously sugary, take a look at Mungo’s desserts and drinks menu. It offers a selection of desserts, deluxe milkshakes, sundaes, smoothies, and last but certainly not least, donut milkshakes…yes donut milkshakes- or as Mungo’s calls them, ‘Freakshakes’. Who knew tucked away in the back on the bottom floor of Eliot College existed such a magical place?!

I was conflicted between having breakfast or lunch. But due to the fact I have had some unpleasant past experiences with veggies sausages- bad would be an understatement, I decided breakfast as I was intrigued to see what this popular student eatery had to offer.

I chose their ‘Full Works’ Mungo’s veggie breakfast (V). It included, two golden hash browns, two perfectly fried eggs, cooked tomato, baked beans, your choice of white or brown toast and two veggies sausages- and that’s not even the best part, the whole thing cost me £5.20! Now that’s what I call student-friendly. And may I add, these were two of the best veggies sausages I have ever had- and I’m not exaggerating. They weren’t that plain Quorn stuff, but instead heaven shaped in the form of a crispy coated cylinder, filled with creamy mash and mixed vegetables. Oh, and to top it all off I treated myself to a smoothie, and not just any smoothie, but the Detox-Zing smoothie. Intrigued? Get one, as you’ll feel as fresh as a daisy after, promise.

So if you’re ever on the Canterbury campus, and fancy something that’ll tickle your taste buds but all at a reasonable price, then pop in and give Mungo’s a go. You won’t be disappointed.
