I Love BTS And So Should You

You can’t stop me loving this band.

If you’ve been following pop music in the last decade, then I’m certain that you’ve heard of BTS. Formed in 2013, this South-Korean boy band has taken the world by storm with their music and charms. Don’t believe me? Their first full-English song — Dynamite (2020) — became the first South Korean song to ever reach Number One on the Billboard’s Hot 100 List. But this wasn’t the first time BTS dominated the charts, as their 2021 release Butter stayed in the Number One spot on Billboard’s Hot 100 List for nine weeks. With five songs having debuted Number One on the music charts, BTS are crossing milestones in their careers.

But it’s not just their music which has captured the hearts of so many. Wherever these men go, people swoon. In 2017, BTS member Jin trended on Twitter for his handsomeness with hashtags like #ThirdOneFromTheLeft. Likewise, V recently broke the Guinness World Record for the fastest person to reach one million and ten million followers on the social networking app Instagram.

Whether you love them or cannot stand the sight of them, there is just no escaping the influence of BTS. But to those unfamiliar with the band, you may be wondering what is so special about this boy band. What is it about these seven men that has the world tuned in?

Now, as much as I’d like to explain to you fully why that is and end up writing a thesis in the process, that just isn’t practical. I mean, who has that kind of time on their hands (*closes ten tabs*)? And if you did, chances are you’d be watching those super-edited compilations on YouTube. For research purposes. So, I’ll give you the shorter, more practical answer.

They’re likeable.

No, really! In a world obsessed with tearing other people down, BTS are a ray of light and a reminder that kindness never goes out of style. Using their exponential platform as a force for good, the group donated $1 million to Black Lives Matter, and inspired their fans (known as ARMYS) to do the same — June 2020.

And if that isn’t convincing enough, I urge you to read some of the (translated) lyrics to their songs. My personal favourite, Magic Shop (2018), is about music being a comfort during difficult times in life.

Without over-sharing, low self-esteem is something I’m familiar with. I’ve always been hard on myself and never felt like I was enough of something, and too much of something else. And while I know that a lot of my growth comes from myself and my immediate loved ones, I mean it when I say that it is because of BTS that I have become more comfortable within myself.

I’m not the only one. In a heart-warming Guardian article, ARMYS from different ages, backgrounds, and genders shared why they love this boy-band so much. The group’s messages of loving yourself and overcoming difficult times ring universal. And with their appointments as Special Envoys by South Korean President Moon Jae-In, it’s clear that it’s a message that only needs more encouragement — September 2021.

So whether you’re an ARMY or not, if there’s one thing you take away from this article I hope it’s that BTS deserve the attention they receive; because when a group can inspire others to be kind — whether to others or themselves — then that’s a message that is always worth spreading.

Besides, who said I needed permission to listen?
