My average day as a cardiothoracic surgeon
Well not quite…
Spoiler alert: some reveal of character deaths ahead*
Grey’s anatomy is a TV series based in Seattle where a fictional “Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital” exists along with a set of very gorgeous surgeons who are at the cutting-edge of medicine. Now, first things first, I DO NOT want to visit as a patient, instead I would visit as a cutting-edge surgeon. This is because after a few years, the injuries seem to get more and more rare, and the survival rate seems to be 50/50.
Meredith Grey is a central character to the hospital and what I wouldn’t give to have a conversation with her. I feel it entirely necessary to ask her if she really was aware she was in ‘the in-between’ (that awkward bit between life and the afterlife). Did she feel pain? Did she know why the other people were there? Did she feel a choice to stay or go? It’s extraordinary stuff for one person to go through. Despite the fact I want to know this, I just don’t think I want to be associated with her. Her mother’s Alzheimer’s, her dad’s alcoholism and death, her husband dying, her sister and friends dying in a plane crash and being held at gunpoint, just doesn’t appeal to me.
My NO.8 ball didn’t quite have the answers so I turned to some light-hearted quizzes. A short Buzzfeed quiz has revealed I would, in fact, be a cardiothoracic surgeon. So, I will be brushing shoulders with the likes of Dr. Christina Yang and Dr Teddy Altman. Very tough and independent women. I didn’t see this coming, but we can’t choose our gifts.
Of course, I then had to establish people I wouldn’t get on with, and so I took the Quiz “Which “Grey’s Anatomy” Character Is Your Mortal Enemy” which was regrettably Dr Bailey, the head of the hospital. This was unfortunate to say the least.
Lastly, I of course need a love interest as it seems my colleagues have about five. Naturally, I took the quiz “Which “Grey’s Anatomy” Hottie You’d Date Based On Your Cupcake Preferences’ which resulted in Dr Sloan or, ‘McSteamy’ as many like to call him. He’s a plastic surgeon and is undeniably gorgeous, however the romance will be short lived- no love lasts long at the Grey Sloan memorial hospital.
Nevertheless, I shall strive on like the rest of them in cardio and try not to lose my job in the argument with the head of the hospital *gulp*. What will a day in my life look like? After some research, watching 17 seasons of the show, I feel I can piece together my average day…
- Wake up beside a young, unknown intern in the call room.
- Go to the surgery board to find I’ve been kicked off two surgeries, I later find out this was Dr Bailey’s request.
- Storm off.
- Bump into McSteamy, boyfriend, in the hallway who says they have a patient who needs a heart bypass. Takeover that surgery.
- Spend 6 hours operating.
- After surgery, meet McSteamy in the store cupboard.
- Check up on the patient, only to realise it was actually my ex-husband who I hadn’t seen for years.
- Have an emotional breakdown. Colleagues cheer me up.
- Drink at local pub.
So, there we have it. The questions I want answering, my speciality and love interests as a surgeon in this medical drama. I implore you to have a watch. What would your day look like?
