Courts left baffled after what originally seemed a simple case of theft turned into a child custody battle. Dame Gothel won custody of new-born baby, Rapunzel, after her parents traded her for some salad.

Gothel was promised guardianship of the Wiggins’ new-borne after she caught Mr Wiggins stealing rampion from her garden to feed his pregnant wife. Gothel granted the Wiggins as much rampion as they desired in exchange for custody of their soon-to-be-born child, to which the Wiggins agreed. But after the baby’s birth, the Wiggins fell in love with their new daughter and refused to give her up to Gothel, prompting the spinster to take the couple to court.

Both sides presented strong arguments; on one hand there was the Wiggin’s parental rights but on the other the binding nature of their contract with Gothel, what’s more the Wiggin’s two-parent combo to Gothel’s single motherhood needed to be considered. Readers may recall the similar case of Miller vs. Stiltskin occurring two years prior where Millicent Miller — now Queen of Azalea — promised Rumple Stiltskin her firstborn child in exchange for his services in spinning straw into gold. Miller was able to loophole her way out of the contract and maintain guardianship of her child.

But in the present case the defence found no such loophole and eventually the presiding judge — Lord Justice Chaddington — ruled that given the conditions of their contract with Gothel, either the Wiggins relinquish their custodial rights as previously agreed or they face punishment for theft and trespassing (which would likely result in the confiscation of their daughter by the proper authorities anyway). With visible distress, the Wiggins conceded to the former and their daughter was handed over to a triumphant Gothel.

The Wiggins were photographed leaving court in tears whilst Gothel happily took questions from the press. One of which was what she planned to do next. Her answer:

“I will be searching for a new home to raise my daughter — we can’t stay in my current house, of course. I’m thinking somewhere remote in the forest with wonderful sky views.”
