You Don’t Need Resolutions For 2021
On New Year’s Eve, proposing resolutions for the upcoming year has become somewhat of an obligatory custom. Promising yourself that you’re going to visit the gym more frequently, promising yourself that you will quit smoking or drinking, promising yourself to become a better person. But let’s be honest: How many of those promises will stick longer than just a few weeks? Many New Year’s resolutions are abandoned in the very first month. And during the current circumstances, I don’t see any indications for this to change.
This is why we need to get rid of them.
Don’t get me wrong. Having aims and goals in your life is really important. It is what we thrive on as humans. Just floating throughout the year can be harmful. Forcing them on yourself, because the calendar says 31st of December, is even worse. Building your own goals should be organic. If the goal becomes too much of a burden, draining all the enjoyment from achieving the goal, it is doomed from the start. You won’t get in shape because you told yourself so on New Year’s Eve. You won’t find the love of your life because of that. Instead of imposing obligations to learn to play a new instrument or to follow up a work-out routine, just try to be a better person to your environment — and more importantly — to yourself.
You’re a liar if you say you would have predicted what 2020 had coming for us. Nobody thought that Corona would such a major role in our lives, squeezing the last piece of life out of not abandoned resolutions. That’s why you shouldn’t be too hard on you this year. Try to set lower goals throughout the year, which keep you motivated. If you reach one of them, aim a bit higher. Gradually.
Don’t rush, don’t lose your focus, just keep on going.
There will be days on which you think you won’t achieve anything. That’s okay. There is no shame in it. We’re all just humans, living in a crazy life and in a society, which pressures its members into depression. If the only thing you did today to wake up and make some food: Congratulations! We don’t have to work perfectly every day. We are allowed to have lazy days. And that’s why we should stop making New Year’s resolution. Don’t put more pressure on yourself, society will already to that for you. Just hang it and you will see — you will reach your goals without setting them while watching fireworks.
