Questions need answers

Hello friends,

My name is Segun Ade-Martins. I’m a writer and content designer, and over the next few weeks, I will be supplying posts about content design.

The reason is twofold: it happens that I’m a freelancer, and I’m looking for contract work. Now, why should you hire me?

I practice content-first UX design with a business development background. My aim is to support organisations by crafting experiences aligned with customer satisfaction and company goals. More on this later.

Why should you hire me?

The short answer is experience. I have experience delivering a service from back to front — in my case, tertiary education. I’ve organised training, class schedules, hired lecturers, developed course content, written website copy, developed marketing collateral (ads, flyers, brochures, etc.), counselled prospective students, taught courses, and more for a school of under 50 personnel.

Essentially, I managed a team to deliver technology and management programmes and courses for young adults just starting their higher education as well as older adults looking to add skills or switch careers.

Therefore, with all this experience in business processes, I can empathise with organisations’ needs as well as customers’ needs and wants and act accordingly within the design role.

Additionally, I live in Abuja, Nigeria, and can work remotely. I can also work in the United Kingdom; remote work at first. Then for in-person (hybrid) activities, I would need a month to relocate.

What are content design, UX design, and UX writing?

Earlier, I referred to myself as a content designer and invoked “content-first UX design.” What do they mean, and what’s the difference?

First of all, I didn’t acquire this knowledge from thin air; I was introduced to it by Yuval Keshtcher at the UX Writing Hub. I finished the bootcamp programme there in late 2022. Wait, another term, ux writing, hang-on.

Content design and UX writing are terms for the same activity. They are interchangeable. The content design nomenclature is more prevalent in the UK, with Sarah Winter, founder of Content Design London, And UX writing is more common elsewhere in the world, specifically in the US.

So, how are they different from UX design? Or should I say UI/UX design? Facepalm and shrug. UX design, particularly the UI end, tends to follow a container-first mindset.

This means that a UI/UX designer focuses on the appearance of an interface and how users will use said interface.

However, a content-first designer, a.k.a., a content designer or UX writer, will focus on the content users will interact with. In the coming weeks, I will breakdown the nuances and nitty-gritty of what I do as a content designer. I prefer this term because it actually describes the tasks and goals better than the term “UX writer.”

Let me know your thoughts, if you agree or disagree with anything or want to know more, and if there’s any way I can assist your organisation’s goals.

Cheers.
