Who doesn’t love discounts?

Many of my friends spend 30 minutes on the food delivery app to find the best discounted price to order food. The discount could be 5%, 10%, or sometimes 20%.

Based on my experience this is how we Indians react and make decisions. After all, why spend more if you can get the same thing at a discounted price.

The big brands like Netflix, Amazon, Zoom, YouTube, etc also have realized this and already using a country specific pricing strategy.

It is obvious that the price set for the USA market may be applicable for European countries to some extent but it is definitely not affordable in most of the Asian countries.

And the reason is simple: each country has a different purchasing power index.

The purchasing power in the USA is much higher than in India.

That’s the fact.

India Is Price Sensitive But A Huge Market

Price sensitivity is deeply rooted in the Indian market, with consumers evaluating products based on cost and value for money.

There are many factors such as income, middle-class population, cost conscious mindset, and multiple available alternatives to choose from that contribute to price sensitivity.

Here is the instant proof of how prices are adjusted by big brands based on PPP (Purchasing Power Parity) and consumer mindset to cater to the Indian market.

  • Netflix Subscription: 149 INR per month (i.e. $1.8 in USD)
  • Amazon Prime Subscription: 299 INR per month (i.e. $3.6 in USD)
  • YouTube Premium: 139 INR per month (i.e. $1.7 in USD)

Medium Subscription NOW v/s THEN

Medium has adopted the PPP model and adjusted the price according to the Purchasing Power Parity index. But before that Medium membership subscription was for $5 (- 400 INR) /month OR $50 (4000 INR) /year.

But now price for the Medium subscription for Indians is 199 INR/month (or 1990 INR/year).

Do you see a direct 50% discount due to PPP?

Steps To Buy Medium Membership For Indians

First and foremost you need an account on Medium platform to become a medium premium member. All you need is email id, mobile number, that’s it.

If you’re still not on Medium (chances are less), sign-up for free. I’d highly recommend downloading the Medium mobile app from the app store and login using the same credentials.

3 Things You Need:

  1. Android Mobile
  2. Google Account
  3. Debit/Credit/UPI for transaction

The reason you need an Android mobile is because I haven’t seen any other ways using web or iOS devices to subscribe for membership with parity price.

This could be temporary. I’m pretty sure in the next couple of weeks or months you’ll be able to purchase membership using a web or iOS device.

Open Medium app on Android phone.

Go to Account> Setting> Membership

Here are the screenshots of my own membership subscriptions details for reference.
