10 Best Oscar Moments

10. Former broadcast journalist Willow Bay wearing a Rodarte-designed Yoda dress to the Oscars. The fashion force is with her.

9. Benedict Cumberbatch doing what we’re already thinking or doing during the Oscars—getting ready for a long night (of drinking).

8. Eddie Redmayne’s flabbergasted look when he received the Oscar for Best Actor for his performance in The Theory of Everything. He looks so happy, he might just drop that tiny, gold man.

7. Birdman director Alejandro González Iñárritu turning his Best Picture speech into a platform for talking about immigration reform. Iñárritu dedicated his speech to his “fellow Mexican immigrants,” saying “I hope Mexican immigrants in this country can be treated with the same dignity as the ones who came before and built this immigrant nation.”

(Iñárritu took Best Picture announcer and friend Sean Penn’s green card joke in stride, commenting that “I didn’t find it offensive. I thought it was very funny.”

Otherwise we might have had to put this incident on the worst moments list!)

6. Gaga’s killer “Sound of Music” medley. If you didn’t believe that she could sing before, you will now.

5. Lady Gaga and Julie Andrew’s gave some big-time feels with this long embrace following Gaga’s performance. One of the most tender moments of the night.

4.Graham Moore’s acceptance speech for Best Adapted Screenplay on The Imitation Game reminded us all to “stay different” and to “stay weird.” He gets extra brownie points for earnestly thanking Oprah, too!

3. Patricia Arquette’s impassioned speech for women’s wage equality in the U.S. ‘Nuff said.

2. Common and John Legend’s emotional performance of Best Song winner “Glory” from Selma. They didn’t just make David Oyelowo cry. The Dolby erupted into a standing O! (And made us cheer and tear up from home, to0.)

  1. And finally, Meryl’s “Yes, yes, yes!” reaction to Arquette’s Oscar speech had us all going YAAASSSSS! It’s a win when anyone can get this queen of haute-Hollywood-drama to cheer like she’s at a football game. Like Meryl, we say “Yes!” to all these Oscar moments.

10 Worst / Most Awkward Oscar Moments

And the award for Best / Most Awkward Oscar Moment goes to…

10. Lady Gaga’s gloves.

9. Neil Patrick Harris’ drawn out “quick change.”

8. Followed by NPH in his tightie-whities. (Even though it’s supposed to be a paraody of Birdman…)

7. John Travolta manhandling Idina Menzel’s chin in a strangely cutesy way — because that really makes up for mispronouncing her name at last year’s Oscars.

6. This camera angle.

5. And this one.

4. And this one on Cate Blanchett.

(Miraculously this cameraman managed to avoid any cutting words from the actress, who’s unafraid of calling out the “glam cam” for its roving eye upon red carpet women.)

3. Ryan Seacrest for not “asking her more” when he queried actress Dakota Johnson about which prop / sex toy she took home from the Fifty Shades of Grey set. This question was enough to make us groan, and not in a good way.

2. If being whipped by a sadomasochist on screen and assaulted by Ryan Seacrest’s questions weren’t enough, poor Dakota Johnson also gets embarrassed by her mom, star Melanie Griffith, on the red carpet. Even mommy won’t see Fifty Shades.

  1. Lastly, Neil Patrick Harris’ attempt to make light of the Selma snub by getting David Oyelowo to deliver a punchline in his posh, “British accent.” Oyelowo’s expression says it all.
