Kate’s blog is called “Beauty Matters”. She writes very scholarly, she even includes a bibliography at the end of each of her articles. I then found out she is a qualified teacher with a degree in Psychology, which definitely correlates with her formal style of writing and her school-like formatting of each article. and She utilizes titles in between each different topic she brings up which makes it very clear and organized, as well as also a little bit tight on her boundaries. Her voice is not strong, but it does appear when she bolds specific words in each blog post. The styling of her blog also feels very under-designed. To me, that is interesting because she writes about beauty yet there is so little taken into account about beauty in her blog design.

Her blog is also considered sociologist driven, which I have no technical experience in this subject. However, I am fascinated by it and write my own psychological observations in beauty and fashion. It makes me happy to know that someone with actual experience in this topic can accredit my blog’s premise.

In her words, her blog is:

“ Beauty is a distinctly human phenomenon, and the need to create objects of beauty has been a driving force throughout our cultural history. Since the earliest cave art and carvings of ancient man, beauty has been expressed by humans in poetry, music, paintings, sculpture and other creative forms. Through trends in fashion, cosmetics, body modification, alteration and beauty culture, the human body itself can also be expressed as an object of beauty. This site is a personal exploration of these matters of beauty in an attempt to further our understanding of the cultural heritages of societies in different times and places. Written by a qualified teacher with degrees in Music and Psychology, Beauty Matters contains many original articles that yield insights into the nature of beauty.”

She also has one review by Sociology Central that she features on her blog which states:

“Beauty Matters offers a range of articles and resources (including detailed lesson plans) about aspects of “beauty”- including material on body image, fashion and attraction. The text is short, concise and clearly-written and the site’s subject matter fits quite neatly into different parts of the OCR (Individual and Society) and AQA (Health, Medicine and the Body) specifications. Content is largely aimed at a GCSE audience, but the teaching resources contain ideas that can be easily adapted for A-level students.”

This review gave me more insight on what her audience is meant to be, a highly educated and academic one. Although it is on blogger, it is not a true blog, but more as a collection of articles written on a regular basis. Nevertheless, she is a great website for my own blog to look up to. Going through Kate’s blog made me a little bit more confident about my blog topics. There are prominent questions that should be asked of beauty and fashion, not ones that are simply of vanity and pop culture.
